Interview with Edward Charboneau , Inventor of the Wireless Pet Door Bell Chime Mat

1. How did you come up with the idea of the Pet Doorbell Mat System?

Design date of the Pet Doorbell Mat System was in 1999. Our cat always wanted to go out at night, but we could not hear him when he wanted to come in, it was very cold in the winter sometimes around -35 degrees.

So I started to check the internet for a solution. Not finding one that could really meet ours needs. I started my inventing process.

2. How long did it take to bring your idea to market?

It took about a year to perfect it.

3. What makes your product unique?

It is the only pet doorbell mat available and it can be used inside or outside. It also requires no training and is the only mat that can detect weight as small as 2 pounds. (small cats etc).

4. Are you planning any enhancements/improvements to the product?

Always looking to enhance or improve our Pet Doorbell Mat System.

5. What is your professional background? Did that line of work or education help you in developing this product?

I am an electrical Eng./Computer Network Eng. Yes it did, since the modifications and design of the Pet Doorbell Mat System, required electrical and electronic knowledge to design and build.

6. Throughout the entire inventive/manufacturing process what was the hardest obstacle you faced?

Design and construction of the Pet Doorbell ( Mat ) was the most difficult. I purchase other mats (designed for human use) and tested them, after I was convinced that they all were inferior for our current needs. I designed my own which is totally superior to all the others in regards to reliability and use for all seasons, indoors or out. It also is the only Mat that can detect weights as small as 2 lbs. with out false alarms. It was trial and error, testing and more testing and modifications until I was happy with the results.

8. Is there anything else you'd like readers to know about you or your product?

The Pet Doorbell Mat System also can be used for shopkeepers or most any other human application, not only for pets The birth of the Pet doorbell MAT May 21, 1999, over the past several years, we have given another liberty to our Kitty, his own personal Pet Door Bell Chime Mat, and kitty loves the Pet Door Bell Chime MAT.

As you may know, in Vermont our temperatures quite often drop to 35 degrees below zero. Having a concern for Kitty, being left out in the cold I started to look for ways to allow Kitty to inform us of his desire to come in. I had an idea, a pet doorbell or door bell chime. I searched the Internet and found a nice product, The Pet Door bell Chime Paw, however kitty did not want to learn to press the pet door bell (Paw) for attention.

I also found many other pet door bell novelties during my searches, but all required training the pet. Our Pet DoorBell requires NO training.

Since these pet door bell, doorbell, products did not meet my immediate needs, I decided on May 21, 1999, to make my own Pet Door Bell, but use a Pet Door bell MAT instead of using a door bell button. That was the birth of the Pet Door bell, Chime MAT .

Kitty has been chiming his Pet Door bell MAT , for a few years now. He lets us know when he wants to go out or come in, he just steps on the Pet Door bell Chime mat.

Kitty Life Before the Pet Door Bell Chime MAT

Kitty would do his regular things like crying and jumping on the bed to let us know he wanted to go out at 3:00am, the problem was, we would let him out, but would fall back to sleep and not hear him when he wanted to come back in.

We spent a lot of time awake at night waiting for him. We always made sure he was safe and warm, but this required a lot of monitoring of Kitty. But Kitty had things to do and needed to go out each night, yes he still insisted on going out in the chilling cold, snow or rain.

At first Kitty did not know he was ringing his Pet Door bell Chime MAT , but after a while he realized the relationship. Now he gives thanks each evening knowing we are listening for him.
